What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is designed to assist producers in developing countries achieve sustainable and equitable trade relationships.

Fairtrade is all about empowering small-scale, and often marginalised farmers and producers through bettering prices and terms of trade, fairer working conditions and a fairer deal overall. Fairtrade International is the umbrella NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) that have created international Fairtrade standards that must be adhered to by all parties involved, including Fairtrade producers and consumers. These standards are based around objectives including, but not limited to:

  • Farmers & producers receiving an increased price for products to ensure industry growth and long-term sustainability.
  • Decent working conditions, including a ban on discrimination, forced labour & child labour.
  • Access to advanced credit lines/finance for producers/exporters
  • Action on climate change – protecting the natural environment through minimising use of energy and water.
  • Clear criteria that ensures production and trade of all Fairtrade certified products are socially and economically fair, as well as environmentally responsible.

The Fairtrade Vision

A world in which all producers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfill their potential and decide on their future.

The Fairtrade Mission

To connect disadvantaged producers and consumers, promote fairer trading conditions and empower producers to combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.

What is Fairtrade coffee?

Fairtrade coffee is coffee certified as having been produced to the specific Fairtrade coffee standards created and governed by Fairtrade International. The detailed document can be viewed here.

With the global price of coffee unpredictable, Fairtrade guarantee the producer/farmer is receiving a minimum price for all coffee beans produced/exported as well as a price premium where applicable. Fairtrade also ensures both producers and consumers of Fairtrade coffee comply with Fairtrade’s standards for hired labour which focuses on workers receiving a fairer share of the economic benefits of the coffee trade.

NB: ‘FLOCERT’ are the primary independent Fairtrade certifier who inspect each related party (producer and consumer) to ensure the relevant social and environmental standards are met for all products that carry the registered Fairtrade mark. Little Owl Coffee Roasters are audited annually and are currently certified by Fairtrade ANZ – FLO ID 41287.
